“They used to call me the Face of Boe” quite frankly it should have been the Face of Omni-sexuality. You all know him; you all have a deep seeded love for Captain Jack Harkness. He is the man that makes everything with a pulse feel wanted. Captain Jack does not discriminate when it comes to loving, which leads me to my rant of the 51st Century and the tolerance of the Universe: Starring Captain Jack Harkness. Now for those of you who do not know what the definition of Omni-sexuality is: “sexual attraction, sexual desire, romantic love, or emotional attraction toward persons of all gender identities and biological sexes.” aka exactly what the 51st century is about. The Doctor states that Jack’s Omni-sexuality is more common in the 51st century, when humankind will deal with multiple alien species and becomes more sexually flexible. (Or in the Doctor’s true words: So many species, so little time) Which during that time all social norms and graces are thrown out the window when it comes to sexual intolerance. Sexual Injustice becomes Sexual Expansion, anything to further the human race. Now I have always loved the Captain Jack character ever since he was introduced for way too many reasons to state but when dealing with this rant I will be specific. I think that in the world of Who and the world of Non-Who Jack Harkness has left his mark which is making everyone a little more tolerant and Omni-sexual with each passing “Hi, I’m Captain Jack Harkness.” To have a character be able to have that effect on people watching is such a wonderful phenomenon in today’s society. By showing that free expression that Jack was exposed to and grew up in during the 51st century be played out in the 21st century, showing both sets of reactions and then ultimately having it be tolerated in a positive way is mind blowingly beautiful. Allowing someone to be who they want to be and with who they want, without bias is the ultimate result of what I take away from the 51st Century. I always applaud Captain Jack for showing us that tolerance is the way to be and I am doing it again now.
